The 2nd Royal Lancaster battalion began the war in India but soon returned home to join 83 Brigade of 28th Division. They arrived in France In the middle of January, 1915 and on 3rd February, 1915, they moved into the front line for the first time when they took over some trenches at Oosthoek near Ypres where they remained until relieved on 7th February. Not used to European winter conditions, the battalion suffered considerably from frostbite but their main problem was the enemy’s shell and sniper fire which resulted in over fifty casualties. George Cornish died from wounds on 9th February and it is likely that he was wounded during this period in the trenches.
